Douglas R. Van Valkenburg is an associate in the Firm?s Litigation Department where he practices in the areas of commercial litigation, bankruptcy, and federal government contracting. He also serves as a Reserve Officer in the United States Army Judge Advocate General?s (JAG) Corps. He is a recent graduate of the Judge Advocate General?s Contract Attorneys Course. Mr. Van Valkenburg is knowledgeable regarding the formation and administration phases of federal government contracting, and assists clients with responding to solicitations, negotiations, bid protests, and contract disputes. He recently conducted a successful bid protest on behalf of a Connecticut based defense contractor regarding a Department of the Navy solicitation for the manufacture of helicopter test equipment.

In October 2004, shortly after joining the Firm, he was mobilized as a Military Police Major for service in the Global War on Terrorism and sent to Baghdad, Iraq. While there, he directed the Iraqi Ministry of Interior's (MOI) biometric data collection effort aimed at vetting the Iraqi Police Forces. In August, 2005, The Department of Defense awarded him the Bronze Star in recognition of his exceptional military service in Iraq, while serving as a member of the Multi-National Security Transition Command. In January 2006, by direction of the President of the United States, Mr. Van Valkenburg was appointed as a Major in the Judge Advocate General Corps (JAGC), United States Army Reserve, serving with the 3rd Legal Support Organization in Boston, Massachusetts.

Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Van Valkenburg served as a summer intern at the United States Attorney?s Office Criminal Division in New Haven, Connecticut where he represented the federal government before the U.S. District Court in a passport fraud presentation and arraignment and assisted in the coordination of investigations and the prosecution of criminal activities. Mr. Van Valkenburg also worked as a legal intern at Smith & Wesson Corporation in Springfield, Massachusetts where he collaborated with outside legal counsel on pending matters, assisted Corporate Counsel in trial preparation, and monitored the progress of municipal lawsuits.

Mr. Van Valkenburg possesses extensive outside sales experience, having managed multi-million dollar sales territories in the industrial equipment, packaging, and air transport industries within California and Nevada prior to attending law school. His experience includes employment with Intertape Polymer Group, Signode (an ITW Company), Zellerbach (A Mead Company), and Airborne Express.

Prior to his sales experience, Mr. Van Valkenburg served on active duty in the United States Army for three years, first as a Field Artillery Officer, and later as a Primary Staff Officer for Intelligence.
