Professional Career
Graham Allen has enjoyed three distinct career phases, and has managed to bring them all together in his current professional practice.

He started his career as a real estate appraiser, qualifying as a Professional Associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and, in 1980, being accepted as a Fellow.  Meanwhile, in British Columbia, he had been accepted as a Professional Member of the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia, becoming its President from 1978/1982.  Finally, he obtained an M.Sc. degree in Urban Land Appraisal from the College of Advanced Land Use Studies, University of Reading, England, in 1973.  Graham is well-known as a speaker on appraisal issues.

Graham obtained his first Law Degree (LL.B. Honours) from the University of London in 1970.  He was subsequently awarded the Degree of LL.B. from the University of British Columbia in 1978.  After five years of being a sole practitioner, Graham joined the partnership of Gardner Snarch & Allen which, in 1986, became Snarch & Allen, a partnership that prospered for nearly twenty years.  In 2006 Graham joined Boughton Law Corporation.

In his third career phase, Graham was accepted for associate membership in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 1984, thereafter becoming a Member in 1999.  He was awarded the designation of Chartered Arbitrator by the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Canada in 1997.  Graham works regularly in arbitration, both as counsel and arbitrator.

As well as arbitration, Graham continues to specialize in assessment matters and First Nations' work.  In assessment, he represents clients such as Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and Four Seasons Hotel in their ongoing appeals.  In First Nations? work, Graham has enjoyed one of the longest careers in the Province.

Graham became Land Management Advisor to the Sechelt Indian Band in 1973, becoming Band Lawyer in 1979.  During this period, Sechelt became the most legally advanced Band in Canada under the Indian Act, and, in 1986, with Graham as its lawyer, it became the first self-governing Band in Canada.  During this period, Graham also served as Advisor to the Alliance of the Musqueam, Sechelt and Squamish Bands and lawyer for Musqueam, Westbank, Nanaimo, Pavilion, Seabird Island, Tsawwassen and Osoyoos First Nations.  Over more than 35 years, Graham Allen has been closely involved with many of the significant events affecting the well-being of First Nations in British Columbia.
