Babak is a partner and the co-head of the Dispute Resolution Team at BCF.
In 2006, Babak was identified by Global Arbitration Review as one of 45 leaders under 45 in the field of international commercial arbitration. He was also selected by his peers to be among The International Who?s Who of Commercial Arbitration and The International Who?s Who of Business Lawyers. In early 2007, Babak was listed by Global Arbitration Review as being ?Highly Regarded? among Canada?s Top 21 arbitration names. Babak is listed in the 2007 issue of The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, the 2008 Edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada, and in the 2008 Edition of Lexpert/American Lawyer Media publication, A Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada.
Babak has practiced law in both common and civil law jurisdictions. He has represented and continues to act for domestic and international private and state parties before institutional and ad hoc tribunals in a variety of disputes, including new technology, pharmaceutical, oil & gas, telecommunication and construction. Babak has also acted as sole and party-nominated arbitrator in a number of international and domestic disputes. Babak has appeared and continues to appear as counsel before various Canadian courts.
During the year 1998, Babak was counsel to an Ontario software company located in Toronto, Ontario. In addition to advising this company on a variety of commercial matters, Babak assisted this company with the expansion of its international business in the United States, Europe and South America. During the year 1999, Babak was a Senior Legal Advisor and Team Leader at the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant (World War II) Accounts in Switzerland. During the year 2000, Babak was counsel to a large multi-national insurance company during the negotiations of the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims (ICHEIC) dispute resolution process. In 2001, Babak was a delegate of the Government of Canada at the meetings of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) in Vienna, Austria.
Babak is the past Editor-in-chief of The Globetrotter (The Canadian Bar Association International Law Section Newsletter), the Editor of Carswell's Handbook of International Dispute Resolution Rules (1999 ? Thomson Publishing), and a co-author of The Osler Guide to Commercial Arbitration in Canada (2006 ? Kluwer Law International). Babak is the Editor of the IBA Mediation Committee Newsletter and a member of the Editorial Board of Dispute Resolution International, a journal published by the Dispute Resolution Section of the IBA. He has written and lectured extensively in the fields of domestic and international commercial arbitration. Babak was a part-time lecturer at the University of Zurich and at the University of Montreal. He is currently teaching a domestic and international dispute resolution course at the University of Sherbrooke. |
