Lavery Modise is one of the top labour lawyers in South Africa, who has represented trade unions and several large employers. As a litigation attorney, he has represented clients in all courts up to the Supreme Court of Appeals. He acts as arbitrator and mediator in labour related matters and has also acted as a judge of the Labour Court from time to time. At present he is a mediation and arbitration panellist of the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council, a part-time senior commissioner at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and the chairperson of the General Public Service Sectoral Bargaining Council. Lavery has chaired various government department inquiries, such as the Mpumalanga Legislature inquiries in respect of misconduct committed by senior employees, the Department of Labour disciplinary inquiries in respect of alleged UIF fraud in Cape Town and alleged misconduct by a director in Durban, and the Northern Province Government disciplinary inquiry regarding the alleged misconduct of a Director in the Department of Transport. |
