Robert Zimmerman is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer. He focuses his practice in the areas of employment law, business, commercial and real estate counseling and litigation. He has successfully represented private and public companies, governmental entities and individuals in administrative hearings, arbitrations, mediations, trials and appeals. He has successfully argued cases before the Ohio Supreme Court and numerous Ohio district courts of appeal. Mr. Zimmerman has defended employers in a wide variety of employment law disputes, including claims of racial, sexual, age, religious and disability discrimination, wrongful discharge in violation of public policy, negligent hiring and supervision and other employment-related tort claims. Mr. Zimmerman was appointed special counsel by the Cuyahoga County Prosecuting Attorney to advise the Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board concerning the procedure to terminate its Chief Executive Officer. He has extensive litigation and counseling experience in a wide variety of business and commercial matters, including the enforcement of covenants not to compete, the prosecution and defense of actions under RICO, commercial contract disputes, construction claims, and business tort actions. He has represented major shopping malls, real estate developers, and major retailers in complex real estate disputes involving commercial leases, trespass, zoning and commercial and residential evictions. Mr. Zimmerman authored R.C. 1707.12: A Shield, Not a Sword, Ohio Securities Bulletin and 1995 Enforcement Law Reporter, North American Securities Administrators Association. In that article, he analyzed his successful argument before the Ohio Supreme Court in State ex rel. Dublin Securities, Inc. v. Ohio Division of Securities, et al. Prior to joining Kahn Kleinman, Mr. Zimmerman served as an Assistant Ohio Attorney General from 1991-1995. He currently serves on the Executive and Central Committees of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party and as President of the Shaker Heights Democratic Club. Mr. Zimmerman was elected a delegate to the 2000 Democratic National Convention on behalf of Vice President Al Gore. In 2005, Mr. Zimmerman was elected to the Shaker Heights City Council. He currently serves as chairperson of the Safety and Public Works Committee. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Cleveland Jewish Federation, and serves as Chair of the Government Relations Committee, and is a member of the American, Ohio State, and Cleveland Bar Associations.
