John specialises in Property Litigation/litigation. This involves establishing the key commercial objectives to be achieved and then putting together a creative strategy to achieve those objectives. This may involve a range of skills and techniques including negotiation, mediation, arbitration and/or as a last resort litigation. John manages and supervises casework in both the commercial and residential sectors. He has particular expertise in landlord and tenant disputes, business lease renewals and the interpretation and enforcement of lease covenants. John has written and lectured on these subjects. John has developed a high profile in the niche area of residential enfranchisement and right to buy issues. John gives strategic advice to clients and other solicitors on these issues. John also undertakes professional negligence casework where clients seek to recover damages from former professional advisers who have not come up to scratch. John's clients include national and international organisations who may be both landlords and tenants. He also represents major commercial property developers, private clients with substantial property portfolios and tenant's residents associations and organisations. John has run a series of successful seminars and workshops on landlord and tenant issues. Sometimes these are for open invitation, but John also prepares tailor made workshops to be presented in-house to clients and clients' property advisers. In February 2003, the Lord Chancellor appointed John to a part-time judicial post. John sits in the Residential Property Service Tribunal as a Lawyer Chairman for the London and Eastern regions. The casework before his Tribunal involves breaches of covenant, residential service charges disputes, appointments of managers, enfranchisement/lease extension cases and the setting of fair and market rents in the private rented sector. In April 2004 John was apointed editor of 'Commercial Leases' a monthly newsletter published by Informa Professional, aimed at keeping readers abreast of developments in landlord and tenant law. In March 2005 John was appointed to be a part time Deputy Adjudicator to HM Land Registry. The Adjudicator is a new independent judicial office holder who is responsible to determine disputed land registration applications referred by the Chief Land Registrar. In November 2005 John was elected Chairman of the Property Litigation Association. |
